Students are asked to bring in a composition notebook - I have some available for 50 cents. Additionally, students shared their first writing sample. Students also read/annotated an article from Time Magazine about the power and importance of writing. Also, please ALWAYS have a choice reading book with you each day.

Students received info today on StoryCorps' Great Thanksgiving Listen. Students will download the app to their phones and over the course of the Thanksgiving break are to interview a grandparent or some other elder in their lives. This project is about sharing wisdom, gratitude and respect across generations. This gives participants a chance to discover family history while honoring elders through the act of listening. These stories may then be uploaded to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. For more info, go to the http://StoryCorps.me

Kelsey May Fraser joined us today for poetry. Some students shared their poetry and then we paired up for feedback. Kelsey wants to consider what we like about a piece, what inspired a piece and what may challenge us or confuse us about a piece. Additionally, she wants us to hear what others may say and how we may add to the conversation. Ask, can we push our poetry to another level or idea? Finally, she shared copies of poetry works she wants us peruse and then create a reflection poem after reading 2-3 or the pieces. Reminder: Setting paragraphs due Monday.

We started class with a book talk and Journal Topic #3. After a quick review of MLA format, we had a workshop on Draft #1 of the "Sudden Fiction" homework of their five random items. Students should work towards incorporating the "tools" of the trade when revising this first draft.

We continued sharing our micro fiction tales. Next, students were assigned Draft #1 for a "Sudden Fiction" story [300-750 words]. They are to use the "5 random items" for inspiration. In looking at the 5 items, consider the following: •What’s the character’s name, age, profession? [though these ideas don’t have to be directly included in the story] •Pull the items together in a coherent way. •Ask self: Why does character have these items? Do the objects connect? What do they say about the character? The students may use any genre. The draft should be completed in the CN. Check out the Short Story contest on my website for KDL Write Michigan.

Guest speaker Kelsey May Fraser joined the class today to discuss spoken word poetry. Ms. Fraser is a NV and GVSU graduate with a BA in Writing. Sam Bailey, Northview's Poet Laureate for 2016-17 visited the class to talk about her role and her website where students may submit their work. This is a great place for students to share and to fulfill the requirement of "publishing" their work this semester. We also determined student book talk dates. Next, students paired/shared their drafts from last night's homework. The goal today is to look objectively at the piece and determine what could be added, deleted, substituted, and rearranged. After a book talk, choice reading and conferring, students completed Journal Topic #2. Great story starters shared. Next, we read two stories entitled "What the Tree Saw" written in first-person from the perspective of a tree. Students are assigned to write their own first-person micro fiction [300 words or less] from the perspective of an inanimate object of their choice. Drafts should be completed in their composition notebooks. Be ready to share tomorrow!

Welcome back! Today students received the class syllabus with detailed info on the course and the class website. Students are asked to bring in a composition notebook - I have some available for 50 cents. Additionally, students shared their first writing sample. Students also read/annotated an article from Time Magazine about the power and importance of writing. Also, please ALWAYS have a choice reading book with you each day.

We started off with Journal Topic #7 and students shared their work. Kelsey May joined the class again to push our thinking on Spoken Word. Students watched a few clips and then we discussed the lines that resonated with us along with the patterns and devices of the writers. Students made their own attempt at writing about conflict. We will continue our work with setting, conflict and dialogue next week.

Next, students were in groups of seven and did a workshop style critique of each story. Students will finish up in class tomorrow, make final revisions and then print/hand in.

Today NV Poet Laureate Quinn Kirby addressed the class regarding the school's poetry website and how to submit work. Thank you, Quinn. Next, NV 2012 graduate and GVSU writing major Kelsey May introduced a spoken word poetry unit that will take us through December with scheduled visits over the next three months. Workshop on Draft #2 of short story flash fiction will take place Monday.

Today students worked on Draft #2 of their "Five Random Items" Flash Fiction. Students submitted a copy of Draft #2 and tomorrow will workshop their piece in groups of seven. Poet Laureate, Quinn Kirby, will share info about the school's poetry website and how to submit work. Additionally, Matthew Baker sent a document illustrating the proper way to write a cover letter when submitting work for publication. Another link was added to the Creative Writing website for the Creative Youth Center, which Matthew Baker recommends for intern experience.

Today we had guest author Matt Baker, NV alum and author of If You Find This. He talked with students about strategies to take as a writer in college and beyond. He also shared several sites for submitting work and encouraged the class to read and write as much as possible.

- Choose a bag and look inside
- Using the five items you discover, create a story about the contents/owner. What’s the character’s name, age, profession?[NOTE: These details don’t have to be directly included in the story]
- Pull the items together in a coherent way.
- Ask self: Why does character have these items? Do the objects connect? What do they say about the character?

Students also read/annotated an article from Time Magazine about the power and importance of writing. Also, please ALWAYS have a choice reading book with you each day.

Students received info today on StoryCorps' Great Thanksgiving Listen. Students will download the app to their phones and over the course of the Thanksgiving break are to interview a grandparent or some other elder in their lives. This project is about sharing wisdom, gratitude and respect across generations. This gives participants a chance to discover family history while honoring elders through the act of listening. These stories may then be uploaded to the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. For more info, go to the http://StoryCorps.me

Kelsey May Fraser joined us today for poetry. Some students shared their poetry and then we paired up for feedback. Kelsey wants to consider what we like about a piece, what inspired a piece and what may challenge us or confuse us about a piece. Additionally, she wants us to hear what others may say and how we may add to the conversation. Ask, can we push our poetry to another level or idea? Finally, she shared copies of poetry works she wants us peruse and then create a reflection poem after reading 2-3 or the pieces. Reminder: Setting paragraphs due Monday.

Sam Bailey, Northview's Poet Laureate for 2016-17 visited the class to talk about her role and her website where students may submit their work. This is a great place for students to share and to fulfill the requirement of "publishing" their work this semester. We also determined student book talk dates. Next, students paired/shared their drafts from last night's homework. The goal today is to look objectively at the piece and determine what could be added, deleted, substituted, and rearranged. Students completed Journal Topic #11. Kelsey May joined us for Spoken Word and we watched "Shrinking Women." A few students shared their pieces on conflict and we had the homework to work on a piece of the theme family. Short story drafts printed/shared for Monday.

Jacob Henshaw shared a book talk. Student completed Journal Topic #10 and handed in topics 6-10. Dialogues were returned - students must make corrections and show me those corrections for a grade. Continued sharing of Draft/#1/Story Skeleton.

Students completed Journal Topic #9 and then shared their dialogues. We also shared/wrote six-word short stories - due by end of day. Students received instruction for a short story assignment. Story draft/skeleton due Monday.

I shared a book talk on Saving Sammy. Next we discussed both dialogue and point of view. Students were to complete for HW a dialogue of ten exchanges and type/print for class Thursday.

After Journal Topic #8, students shared their setting paragraphs. We segued into "conflict" with a group conflict activity. We also had a Severe Weather Drill.

Bri Gallagher gave a book talk. GVSU's Fall Arts Celebration will feature two poets next Thursday, Oct. 15 at 7:00 P. M. in the Eberhard Center - 2nd floor. We did part II of our setting activity. HW: complete a setting introductory paragraph in your CNs.

We started off with Journal Topic #7 and students shared their work. Kelsey May joined the class again to push our thinking on Spoken Word. Students watched a few clips and then we discussed the lines that resonated with us along with the patterns and devices of the writers. Students made their own attempt at writing about conflict. We will continue our work with setting, conflict and dialogue next week.

We started with a book talk on the memoir Expecting Adam by Martha Beck. Students shared some of their "Best Excuse Notes." Students completed an activity called "What's in A Name?" and then worked on Day 1 of a creating an original character.

Quinn Kirby shared a book talk and I shared a link to the Poetry Out Loud contest. Students listened to part of Chapter 6 of Frank McCourts's Teacher Man and then wrote their own "best excuse" note. These were done in their CNs and will be shared tomorrow. Conferring continued on the flash fiction stories.

Students completed Journal Topic #4 and shared their story starters. We also watched a Vimeo of a group story project - students are investigating staging out own story starter as part of Art Prize. More info to come.

Final edits on Flash Fiction due today. We discussed the memoir project requirements, due January 16. Students also listened to an NPR interview with memoirist Mary Karr on the Art of Memoir.

Quinn Kirby's Haiku was published in the Grand Rapids Press. Congrats, Quinn. Carson McCready gave a book talk today on Bone Black by Bell Hooks. Next, students were in groups of seven and did a workshop style critique of each story. Students will finish up in class tomorrow, make final revisions and then print/hand in.

Today NV Poet Laureate Quinn Kirby addressed the class regarding the school's poetry website and how to submit work. Thank you, Quinn. Next, NV 2012 graduate and GVSU writing major Kelsey May introduced a spoken word poetry unit that will take us through December with scheduled visits over the next three months. Workshop on Draft #2 of short story flash fiction will take place Monday.

Today students worked on Draft #2 of their "Five Random Items" Flash Fiction. Students submitted a copy of Draft #2 and tomorrow will workshop their piece in groups of seven. Poet Laureate, Quinn Kirby, will share info about the school's poetry website and how to submit work. Additionally, Matthew Baker sent a document illustrating the proper way to write a cover letter when submitting work for publication. Another link was added to the Creative Writing website for the Creative Youth Center, which Matthew Baker recommends for intern experience.

Today we had guest author Matt Baker, NV alum and author of If You Find This. He talked with students about strategies to take as a writer in college and beyond. He also shared several sites for submitting work and encouraged the class to read and write as much as possible.

Students completed Journal #3. Next, we shared draft #1 of the "Flash Fiction." Tomorrow, NHS alum and published author Matthew Baker will join the class to discuss his career as a writer along with sharing his experiences with the writing in general and the publishing industry.

Today we completed Journal #1 and discussed a Time Magazine article. Students are now working on their first story (a "cave" drawing) told with only images and symbols. Time will be permitted in class for students to complete the story. Senior class meeting tomorrow. Juniors are reminded to bring a choice reading book.

Welcome back! Today students received the class syllabus with detailed info on the course and the class website. Students are asked to bring in a composition notebook - I have some available for 50 cents. Additionally, students shared their first writing sample. Students also read/annotated an article from Time Magazine about the power and importance of sharing stories. HW: Personalize composition note books and bring to class tomorrow.
