Round 1 completed. Students must "score" their monologues, which means to "mark it up" in order to make specific dramatic choices for each character. It forces the brain to slow down and think about deliberate choices and not "just talk" and clarifies motivation and structure. Each beat should be marked followed by a tactic. HW: COMPLETE THIS OVER THE WEEKEND FOR BOTH MONOLOGUES. Finally, we read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Today I assigned a paper entitled Play Reaction Essay requesting that students write about a play/musical that made a meaningful impression on them. This could be a recent show or one from years ago. Due Date: Monday, Sept. 18. Next, students shared their scoring for their monologues and discussed how their intentions were reflected in their scoring. Monologues Round #2 is Monday. Finally, we did an activity with script Arrivals and Departures and individual interpretation. These will also be shared Monday. Have a great weekend!!

Today we spent time dissecting a monologue from the play Fences and determining the different beats and tactics throughout the monologue. I also shared an article about the University of Michigan alumni and composers from the hit film La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen. If students didn't already "score" their monologues, they should do that tonight. Round #2 of monologues begins on Monday.

We finished round one of monologues and then devoted the rest of the class to discussing intentions and "scoring" the script and all that that entails. Round 1 completed. Students must "score" their monologues, which means to "mark it up" in order to make specific dramatic choices for each character. It forces the brain to slow down and think about deliberate choices and not "just talk" and clarifies motivation and structure. Each beat should be marked followed by a tactic. HW: COMPLETE THIS OVER THE WEEKEND FOR BOTH MONOLOGUES. Finally, we read The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.

Welcome Back! Students received the course syllabus and we discussed various dates for our public performances and other local theatre opportunities. The ATA website menu has links to several of the local theatres and their seasons and audition schedules. Since students' summer requirement was to prepare two contrasting monologues, their HW for tonight is to complete the character "intentions" sheet. This should be completed for both characters.

Today I assigned a paper entitled Play Reaction Essay requesting that students write about a play/musical that made a meaningful impression on them. This could be a recent show or one from years ago. Due Date: Monday, Sept. 18. Next, students shared their scoring for their monologues and discussed how their intentions were reflected in their scoring. Monologues Round #2 is Monday. Finally, we did an activity with script Arrivals and Departures and individual interpretation. These will also be shared Monday. Have a great weekend!!

Today we spent time dissecting a monologue from the play Fences and determining the different beats and tactics throughout the monologue. I also shared an article about the University of Michigan alumni and composers from the hit film La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen. If students didn't already "score" their monologues, they should do that tonight. Round #2 of monologues begins on Monday.
