Today I did a demo of the Poster Speech. I gave each student a large sheet of poster paper and demonstrated how I want them to complete their speech. Students must present for at least 4 minutes. 2nd Hour shared Guest Speaker feedback and then attended an assembly for Black Out.

1st hour completed a fun communications activity; 2nd hour had our first guest speaker. Students had to record at least three communication skills the guest speaker uses on the job and come up with two questions for the Q and A portion.

We reviewed Unit #1 with a review sheet, model pre-test and Kahoot! Tomorrow's test is worth 50 points [Summative Assessment] and will have fill in, MC and T/F. Students need to know vocabulary terminology and be able to label both communications diagrams.

We reviewed the rules for tomorrow's scavenger hunt, then continued with Unit #1. Students reviewed the communication models and did two activities regarding the "six people" in a conversation.

We continued with Guided Notes on Unit #1 and studied Communication Models and Characteristics. Attention was paid to Dean Barnlund's Theory of the Dynamics of Discussion and how each communication exchange with two people actually involves six people. All Scavenger Hunt clues are due!

We started out with our 25 questions from yesterday regarding "How Unique Are We?" and got into small groups to compare answers and to see what we had in common. Next, we studied a communications quote from the 16th century and analyzed its relevance today with contemporary examples. Reminder: Look for opportunities for the live performance attendance. This may be fulfilled in many different ways throughout the semester. Remember to either have a ticket/program and a "selfie" of you at the event.

We took Unit #1 test today! Next, I did a demo of a poster speech students need to give on themselves. I've provided the paper/markers and they are to fill the posters with their likes/dislikes [be sure to include most important things in their lives]. Speeches begin Wednesday. Also, students doing a famous speech, spoken word or monologue for the minor project must submit their piece by Wednesday. A listening opportunity is this Thursday at GVSU's downtown Eberhard Center at 7:00 - an evening of poetry.

They had to use their common sense as well as prediction skills to determine which clues represented each student. Students are reminded to prepare 2 truths and 1 lie for another activity. Welcome back! Students received the class syllabus along with a number of other course speech requirements and are reminded to be aware of speech due dates and other deadlines. Students also completed a survey which will be used in class for a scavenger hunt. I have asked that all students have a folder and either loose leaf paper or a composition notebook for class. Today we had a wild time with the group scavenger hunt. There were lots of sweaty people running around trying to find clues. All clues needed to follow the rules of communication competence: the clues had to be understood, had to achieve their intended effect and they had to be ethical. Today I did a demo of the Poster Speech. I gave each student a large sheet of poster paper and demonstrated how I want them to complete their speech. Students must present for at least 4 minutes. 2nd Hour shared Guest Speaker feedback and then attended an assembly for Black Out.

1st hour completed a fun communications activity; 2nd hour had our first guest speaker. Students had to record at least three communication skills the guest speaker uses on the job and come up with two questions for the Q and A portion.

We reviewed Unit #1 with a review sheet, model pre-test and Kahoot! Tomorrow's test is worth 50 points [Summative Assessment] and will have fill in, MC and T/F. Students need to know vocabulary terminology and be able to label both communications diagrams.

Half-Days - Both yesterday and today we were finishing Unit #1. We will take a unit test on Thursday. Students shared feedback on the scavenger hunt and we shared our "walk in the woods" results.

We reviewed the rules for tomorrow's scavenger hunt, then continued with Unit #1. Students reviewed the communication models and did two activities regarding the "six people" in a conversation.

We continued with Guided Notes on Unit #1 and studied Communication Models and Characteristics. Attention was paid to Dean Barnlund's Theory of the Dynamics of Discussion and how each communication exchange with two people actually involves six people. All Scavenger Hunt clues are due!

We started out with our 25 questions from yesterday regarding "How Unique Are We?" and got into small groups to compare answers and to see what we had in common. Next, we studied a communications quote from the 16th century and analyzed its relevance today with contemporary examples. Reminder: Look for opportunities for the live performance attendance. This may be fulfilled in many different ways throughout the semester. Remember to either have a ticket/program and a "selfie" of you at the event.

Welcome back! Students received the class syllabus along with a number of other course speech requirements and are reminded to be aware of speech due dates and other deadlines. Students also completed a survey which will be used in class for a scavenger hunt. I have asked that all students have a folder and either loose leaf paper or a composition notebook for class.

We took Unit #1 test today! Next, I did a demo of a poster speech students need to give on themselves. I've provided the paper/markers and they are to fill the posters with their likes/dislikes [be sure to include most important things in their lives]. Speeches begin Wednesday. Also, students doing a famous speech, spoken word or monologue for the minor project must submit their piece by Wednesday. A listening opportunity is this Thursday at GVSU's downtown Eberhard Center at 7:00 - an evening of poetry.

Today we went over the protocol/etiquette for guest speakers since we will have our first guest tomorrow. Next, we went over the game plan for Friday's scavenger hunt. We reviewed the unit and then students created communication models using Legos which they then shared with the class.

We started out with our 25 questions from last Friday regarding "How Unique Are We?" and got into small groups to compare answers and to see what we had in common. Next, we studied a communications quote from the 16th century and analyzed its relevance today with contemporary examples. NOTE: 2nd hour did not get to this activity due to the Black Out assembly.

Next the class participated in a student scavenger hunt using clues from Tuesday's survey. They had to use their common sense as well as prediction skills to determine which clues represented each student. Students are reminded to prepare 2 truths and 1 lie for another activity. Be sure the clues are not obvious. CNs or loose leaf/folders are due by Friday.

Welcome back! Students received the class syllabus along with a number of other course speech requirements and are reminded to be aware of speech due dates and other deadlines. Students also completed a survey which will be used in class for a scavenger hunt. I have asked that all students have a folder and either loose leaf paper or a composition notebook for class. For class tomorrow, please prepare 2 truths and 1 lie about yourself. Additionally, one of the course requirements is to give a Pecha Kucha speech. More information will be coming about this assignment, but if you are not attending the open house and you'd like to see a PK speech done live, go to Noto's restaurant on 28th Street tomorrow night [Sept. 7] at 7:30 P.M. Today we had a wild time with the group scavenger hunt. There were lots of sweaty people running around trying to find clues. All clues needed to follow the rules of communication competence: the clues had to be understood, had to achieve their intended effect and they had to be ethical. The winning team from 3rd hour was Garret Miller, Shinya Kasai, and Maddie Vance. The winning team from 4th hour was Jacob Frye, Kate Muraski, Nathan Sauzedde, Nick Ward.

We continued our Guided Notes - studying two communication models, looking at terms and diagrams - and then students built both models out of Legos and had to show me that they understood each concept of the model. We finished up our lesson on ethics in communication which was a perfect segue into our group scavenger hunt. Students were put into groups and had to write eight clues for another team. The actual hunt will take place on Friday. The point of the lesson follows communication competence: The message must be understood; it must achieve its intended effect; it must be ethical.
